BHP Billiton is a leading global resources company. We create long-term shareholder value through the discovery, acquisition, development and marketing of natural resources.
We are among the world’s top producers of major commodities, including aluminium, energy coal, metallurgical coal, copper, manganese, iron ore, uranium, nickel, silver and titanium minerals, and have substantial interests in oil and gas.
Our strategy is clear and remains unchanged since 2001. We focus on large, long-life, low-cost, upstream, high-quality assets, diversified by commodity, geography and markets. Our disciplined approach to capital deployment has enabled BHP Billiton to both invest in the expansion of high-quality assets and further diversify our portfolio.
Paramount to the way we operate is growing our business safely, in an environmentally sound manner and in a way that demonstrates our unqualified commitment to working with integrity.
Our operations are diversified by commodity and geography, which means we are part of many local communities. We take the responsibility of managing our environmental and community impact very seriously. Across our business, our goal is to minimise negative social impacts while maximising the opportunities and benefits that the Company’s presence brings to each community in which we operate.
A significant proportion of BHP Billiton’s assets and many of its key growth projects are located in Western Australia.
BHP Billiton’s investment in Western Australia is based on four key commodities- iron ore, nickel, petroleum and alumina. Operations in each sector are well established, sustainable and growing.
In Western Australia, BHP Billiton employs more than 24,000 employees and contractors. This includes around 800 Indigenous Australian employees and contractors.
BHP Billiton has a strong commitment to the health and wellbeing of the communities in which we operate in Australia and Western Australia.
Our aim is to work collaboratively, to help improve the health and wellbeing of the communities in which we operate. In Western Australia we continue to work with many organisations supporting programs that are instrumental to the health of our community members.
At present, BHP Billiton invests more than A$50 million a year through our Community Development Program in Western Australia. A key focus of this program is to enhance the health and wellbeing of people in communities in which we operate.
